At 6:30 p.m., the puddle of blood outside of 323 Capp Street at 18th Street was still wet, as was the trail of bloody sneaker prints leading away from the doorway. Behind the yellow crime scene tape, men and women in police uniforms moved busily back and forth.
None of the officers would answer any questions as to what had happened, although Officer Peña did say that one person had been arrested. “It was a fight, and somebody got stabbed,” he said. Inside the opened doorway, another officer aimed a camera at a smear of blood on the wall of the staircase.
“It sounded like a bad fight,” said Georgia Malone, a neighbor that lives on the third floor of the building.“I heard a lot of yelling and commotion in the stairs. I couldn’t make out what they were saying.”
She said the scuffle began at around 5:30 p.m.. She was scared, and stayed in her apartment.
It wasn’t until Malone got a phone call from her roommate saying that she couldn’t get inside the building because it was surrounded by police that Malone felt it was okay to leave her apartment. It sounded like the fight was just between two people, Malone said. Maybe three.
Malone’s roommate, Ruth Martin, said that two women and a young man live in the apartment.
“This is the first time this has happened here,” said Martin.
