The Mission Economic Development Agency, with the help of 62 volunteers, helped 1,954 households receive $2.44 million in refunds on their 2009 taxes this year.

MEDA’s Plaza Adeante site assisted the largest number of beneficiaries, followed by its outer Mission post.

This was the first time that MEDA and the city’s Human Services Agency teamed up to help low-income residents file their taxes. The goal of the 10-week program was to help families claim the earned income tax credit, which is aimed at reducing poverty.

MEDA also reports that it had 200 new applications for ITIN numbers, a number typically used by undocumented immigrant workers to file their taxes.
