Juan Mendez Hernandez, 23, was stabbed and killed early Sunday morning during, or after, a party on Florida Street in the Mission District.

How police were notified remains unclear. The original police report states a neighbor called at 3:29 a.m. to report a trail of blood leading to 1160 Florida St., between 23rd and 24th Streets. Hernandez was found inside.

“The way the police were notified was there was some kind of altercation in the street,” police spokeswoman Albie Esparza told Mission Loc@l Tuesday morning over the phone.

However, neighbors said there was a party in the back of the apartment and that any fight must have taken place there.

When police arrived, Hernandez, who had been stabbed, was declared dead at the scene, according to the original police report. Conversely, Esparza said that Hernandez was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead there.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Hernandez’s age but would not verify if he lived at the address, merely saying that the victim was a resident of San Francisco.

Police shut down the street and questioned people, said neighbors, but whoever attacked Hernandez must have escaped or hidden before police arrived.

No arrests have been made.
