DEREK LASSITER: Whole In My Heart: Music & Art

Witness, Derek Lassiter’s debut EP on Beevine Records, was described as sensual, spiritual, and poetic. Lassiter explored the sounds of Africa and Africa-America in rootsy soul music powered by the drum. Special guests included bassist Tom Freund (former songwriting partner of Ben Harper), and Louisiana blues legend Lady Mem’fis. As his next album, MusicOutside, approaches production, Lassiter again reveals his folk, soul, and jazz influences.

Born in New York City’s South Bronx, Derek Lassiter slowly made his way across the country before settling in San Francisco almost twenty years ago. He works in several disciplines, including music, photography, poetry and theater. As a vocalist, Lassiter has fronted rock, soul and jazz bands at venues such as Slim’s, the Great American Music Hall, and Café du Nord.

From Derek Lassiter:
“I’m looking forward to my return to The Red Poppy. Last year’s show was the highlight of the year for me. You can’t help but be inspired by the space. I’ll be performing songs from my EP Witness and debuting many new songs! I’ve also got some surprising cover tunes to share. A special thanks to Art Khu for sharing his musical genius with me.”
