It’s all about carted food, and a Webby nomination today. From MSF to Crème Brûlée, we just love street food especially when it’s served curbside. It looks like we’re not the only ones who appreciate outdoor dining, both Yelp and Tablehopper newsletters had a run down of food carts.

Topping the list are Brian’s Magic Curry Kart, dishing up $5 curry and the haute-cuisine-turned-street-dessert Crème Brûlée cart is always ready to torch a crème brûlée to perfection–ah Mission street delicacies, how we love thee!

And that’s not all. Truck sweets are going beyond the borders of our beloved neighborhood. According to Yelpers, the Waffle Mania Truck is serving up authentic Belgian waffles with pearl sugar. Since we just got back from Belgium–where as researchers it was our duty to try the local snack–we’ll have to sacrifice ourselves and venture out to Civic Center to make sure they got the recipe right. Report to follow.

As for that nomination we mentioned, it’s true. Mission Loc@l has been nominated for a Webby award! You’ll find us in the student category. We are all very excited and honored to be nominated and we’re now humbly asking for you to rock the Webby vote by casting your ballot for us, here.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
