Mission Cultural Center marked the end of “Death Without Borders,” a November exhibit honoring Day of the Dead, with its fifth annual mole contest, “Mole to Die for.” The contest, which judged professionals and amateurs in spicy Mexican sauce recipes, was held Nov. 19.

First prize winner of the People’s Choice award, Teresa Carreno, beat out seven others with her traditional family recipe.

Chavas restaurant on Mission Street won first prize in the professional category.

Artists Herminia Albarran Romero and Ytaelena Lopez won first prizes for elaborate Day of the Dead altars, pocketing $500 in cash.
