A memorial to 17-year-old Miguel Alvarez appeared at 24th and Capp Streets on Thursday after a shooting just outside the Mission claimed his life on December 9.

The corner of 24th and Capp was also the site of an unrelated shooting incident on Wednesday evening. It’s unclear why the memorial for Alvarez appeared at the same location.

The 17-year-old Alvarez was shot at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday on Holladay Avenue between Peralta Avenue and York Street. His friends drove him to San Francisco General Hospital, but he died later that day from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

The police have not made any arrests, nor have they released any suspect description. Officers were notified of the shots through SpotShotter, an automatic gunshot-detection system, but arrived on the scene after Alvarez had been driven away by his friends. Police went to the hospital, but did not get any information on the shooting from the victim. The Gang Task Force is involved in the homicide investigation.

Roses, prayer candles, and cards left at the intersection of 24th and Capp by Thursday night honored the dead 17-year-old, though they had been mostly swept away by Friday morning. A poster left on the scene indicated that Alvarez would have turned 18 in March 2016.

This is the second homicide near the Mission District in the last five days, following the death of 26-year-old Hector Salvador at 16th and Hoff last weekend. It is the 47th homicide in San Francisco this year.
