It started grey and kind of mystic, it turned out to become just another beautiful, sunny day in the Mission, but not a good one for business – so far. There were sparse, prosaic signs of sales and discounts, but some stores remained closed – to the disappointment of customers.
Businesses said there were not exactly crowds and in fact business was even slower than usual. It could be too soon to call it, but it seems we’ll have just an unusually calm and quiet Friday in the Mission with no lines – not even for brunch.
Black Friday is just a corporate marketing tactic to make people feel anxious about shopping and get them to buy a bunch of cheap junk they don’t need and no one wants. I have a retail business and I want my customers to feel good about what they buy from me. I don’t need or want to hype up Christmas and manipulate people into buying more from me than they want or need to.
