El Tonayense Leaves 24th Street Taco Base

El Tonayense was evicted from its location at 3150 24th St.  but both the property manager and the owner of El Tonayense agreed that the company, known for its taco trucks, moved out without resisting.

The arrangement at 3150 24th St., they said,  wasn’t working out for El Tonayense, which opened a new restaurant at 2560 Marin St. in Potrero and had already moved its catering kitchen.

Benjamín Santana, the owner of El Tonayense, said they had been on a month-to-month lease for three years and the site needed a lot of repairs. They were unwilling to do the repairs without a long term lease.

Bill Talmage, the property manager from Dewolf Realty, said that Santana had lost interest in the 1,800 square foot site and had moved his catering kitchen elsewhere.  Santana said those operations are now at 1903 Carroll Street near Bayview.

Talmage added that Dewolf Realty is already talking to a new tenant, “someone who already has a restaurant somewhere else in the city,” he said.

He declined to say what kind of food the new establishment would be serving.

What is “good” food is highly subjective, but a quick check of the level of patronage when walking by El Tonayense on regular basis for years suggested that it had few walk in admirers and was largely used to provision the roach coaches. Taqueria Guadalajara, immediately across Shotwell St., was the place to go. Tonayense was not the only often empty restaurant along this stretch of 24th: there are others. How they stay in business eludes.

Devastating! I just saw the shuttered door! Aggghh! This was THE best burrito in the Mission, probably all of SF. I stopped eating at the others–they are all LAME!
And to SFMission man–um, most of the orders in there were “to go”; mine always were. So how can you determine how well they did based on the number of people you saw sitting in there?!?!?!?!? crazy.
