Was the man/woman behind the spray can hungry and frustrated by the lure of Grub and then the empty restaurant at 758 Valencia Street?

Maybe they would have put away the can had they dropped in at Rosamunde Sausage Grill where Helene Goupil watched the line grow and the owner hand out cookies on opening day.

We’ve had several small but  serious fires in the Mission District lately including one at 750 Guerrero late Sunday and another on 24th Street earlier this month.  SF Weekly reports in Snuffed Out, that investigating flames in the city  has become increasingly difficult with the fire department’s unit slashed from “11 investigators and two officers to four investigators and one officer.”  There’s lots to learn in Anna McCarthy’s piece including this: in 50 percent of the cases, arsonists watch with onlookers as a target goes up in smoke.

Burrito Justice posted these photos of BART plans from the 1970s including one for a BART tunnel from Sausalito to Columbus Avenue.  There’s a video as well.

Watch later today for Nick Sucharski’s new Mission Dope, MUNI MILES on Mission transportation. And Elizabeth Carr writes today in DRESS CODE on The Mission Statement.  Karla Quintero points to another Mission designer coop,  Studio 3579.

The Chronicle reported yesterday about the 15-year-old arrested in the double murder at Papa Potrero’s on 24th Street in the fall for helping to “hold the victims down.”  Interesting new detail about the murders and one no one mentioned at the time.

Great storm going on outside.  Enjoy the rain.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
