In the Mission District’s third homicide this year, two people were killed in a Sunday afternoon shooting at Papa Potrero’s Pizza at 24th Street and Potrero Avenue. Police believe the shootings are gang related.

Both victims were shot in the restaurant, according to witnesses. One died in the hospital and another died on 24th Street between Hampshire and Potrero, according to witnesses.

Sgt. Wilfred Williams confirmed that two people had been shot and killed, and a third person sustained non-life threatening injuries and remains in the hospital.

Williams said that two suspects were in custody. He said that police were able to apprehend the suspects quickly because after Friday’s homicide, they put officers from the gang task force and undercover unit in the area.

One witness said he was inside the restaurant having a beer and pizza when an argument broke out. He saw bar stools flying, and he ran out of the bar when he heard someone say, call the police.

Outside, he and other witnesses heard four shots and watched an injured man run out of the bar and then fall near Hampshire Street.  At 5:31 p.m., the body was still on 24th Street covered with a yellow tarp.

At 6:46 pm police removed the body from the scene.

Relatives of one of the victims gathered near the cordoned-off crime scene, hugged each other and cried.

The Department of Public Health’s crisis response unit were at the scene, and said they were the unit in charge of assisting the relatives of the victims.

Onlookers standing nearby talked about the victim as a 27-year-old man who had recently lost his mother.  They declined to give any name or details and their information could not be independently confirmed.

Plain clothes and uniformed officers were interviewing witnesses and cordoned off the area up to Hampshire Street. Shattered glass littered the area outside the restaurant.

Police went to a house on 24th Street near Hampshire Street after 4 p.m. and appeared to arrest one man in his early 30s.

The shooting occurred soon after a hit and run  crash at 3:40 p.m. near South Van Ness and 20th Streets, though it is unclear whether the two incidents are related.

The first murder in the Mission District this year occurred on Friday.

Really sad. Just happened to pass by after it happened while walking home from the park. Afternoon went from sunny to somber. Prayers to the families. A woman singing sad ballad with band at nearby restaurant on our walk home.

Just saw the aftermath of this on my way to work. That is very sad, but not a huge surprise, Papa’s is a shady joint. If people could stop blowing people away on my street, that would be great. Damn.

This is such a tragedy. I don’t understand what is going through peoples heads. You only have one life to live!! You don’t only kill that person – you kill their families too!!! Just unbelievable. I lost my son to a violent animal!!! For no reason – just because!!

    Moni

Frank was a cool guy and a good neighbor, lived a couple houses away. Always washing his cars and hanging out, always had a friendly “what’s up” nod. Really sad.

Definitely not like the scum gangbangers around here, lurking like cockroaches and yelling at each other at all hours.

I know Frank since he was a kid. He used to hang out with my nephew when
they were teenagers, he would come over my house and just hang out. I used to see him all the time since I would drive trough his block on my way home. I saw him about three weeks ago and he gave me a big smile.

FRANK YOU WERE LIKE A LIL BROTHER TO US ALL I NEW YOU FOR OVER 35 YEARS AND IT MAKES ME SO SICK TO HEAR ALL THESE REPORTERS SAYING YOU WERE A GANGBANGER. EVERYONE ON SHOTWELL KNOWS THIS IS NOT TRUE. WE ALL WOULD WERE RED OR BURGUNDY, RED AND WHITE,ORANGE AND WHITE, BLACK AND ORANGE, GOLD AND BLUE, WE ALL GREW UP AS 49ER,GIANTS, AND WARRIORS FANS. THERE WAS NO COLORS TO PICK GROWING UP WE LOVED OUR TEAMS AND BECAUSE THE COLOR OF CHOICE BY NORTENO’S IS RED THESE REPORTERS ARE SAYING YOU AND CISCO ARE GANGBANGERS. WERE YOU CALLED A BANGER WHEN YOU WERE FITTED UP IN GIANTS GEAR,OR WARRIORS GEAR. OR IS IT BECAUSE YOU WERE RAISED IN THE MISSION LOVED THE 49ERS AND WORE A RED THROWBACK
JESSIE SAPOLU JERSEY IS THAT WHAT MADE YOU A GANGBANGER. THESE REPORTERS HAVE TO GET THERE STORIES STRAIGHT. OTHER WISE THE POLICE SHOULD GO TO A 49ER HOME GAME AND ARREST HALF THE FANS THAT ARE DRESSED THE SAME WAY OR IS IT YOU CAN ONLY DRESS LIKE THIS AT THE GAME. I LOVE AND MISS YOU FRANK. YOU BRO JUNIOR 1 OF THE ORIGINALS WHO GREW UP ON SHOTWELL

I sit here with tears in my eyes as I read all these posts…To think that the MEDIA labels Cisco and Frank “GANG MEMBERS”…They only report what they hear from those who don’t know shit…And because of those young fools who claim that their from Shotwell…We know who “Los Originals” are…My days have been long from the time we heard of this tragedy…Neither one of you should have suffered this fate…We all have had a long year and a half with the loss of Dave Martinez, Rich Contreras and now the both of you…As it is said in scripture “On the third day he rose again”…Today marks day three and it is time for you to join your brother Lucas, my brother Larry, sister Terri and dad Lou plus our Lord Jesus Christ who will guide you to eternal happiness…From those at 1010 and all the rest of the Shotwell Family we will miss you Frank Pena And Cisco Cornejo…May the Lord also be with your mom, your lady and your son,Jr….I have faith that you will be saving a place for us when it is our time…Lou…
