Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

It’s Day 3 of the teachers strike, schools will be closed tomorrow, and tensions are rising. Read our guide to the outstanding issues, and about the students who tried to meet with Superintendent Maria Su. Mission Local will be covering the strike and negotiations all day (and all night if necessary), so keep checking back for updates.

Joe Rivano Barros reports that millionaire Garry Tan, the venture capitalist who’s served as “the intersection between tech and center-right politics in the city,” has launched a new dark-money group to influence statewide politics with co-founder Forrest Liu and publicist Sam Singer.

For some back story, read our 2024 pieces about Garry Tan wishing death on S.F. politicians, and Forrest Liu screaming at and threatening people at public meetings.

Yesterday, the Board of Supervisors approved Mayor Lurie’s $14 million proposed “sobering center,” despite a memo from the city attorney’s office warning of the legal risks. Abigail Vรขn Neely reports that the sheriff’s department and a city contractor plan to move ahead with “urgency.”

More soon,

Sara
