The SFPD was grilled by police commissioners last night over reports that its racial data on traffic stops might be fraudulent, with one officer reporting that all but six of 1,139 stops were white drivers. ย In 2021, the SFPD ordered quarterly audits of traffic stop data to comply with Justice Department reform recommendations, but it doesn’t check the veracity of the data. Chief Scott said such auditing could be “a wet blanket, in terms of officers wanting to get out there and do the job.โ
In other criminal justice news, DA Brooke Jenkins has raised the city’s conviction rate, and is depending less on diversion programs. The total percentage of cases being charged remains flat, but there are more petty theft and more felony narcotics cases prosecuted.
The CEO of Cruise has some advice for San Francisco. The city should be โrolling out the red carpetโ for self-driving cars, he says, โif weโre serious about safety.โ
