Following last year’s redistricting debacle, the Elections Commission has approved a 62-page report packed with recommendations for the city on how to improve SF’s process for 2030. See Will Jarrett’s analysis of the proposed changes, and the political battles still raging over redistricting.
Supervisor Myrna Melgar has proposed new legislation working around a state law that says tenants need to get a DBI notice of violation before suing landlords over life-endangering conditions. Currently the wait can be interminable: in one case, DBI didn’t close a 2018 complaint for lack of heat until 2021, and the tenants couldn’t bring the landlord to court.
A judge has ruled that the police shooting of a man brandishing a knife should be part of the evidence in the man’s trial for weapon possession and resisting arrest. The DA’s office wanted to prohibit any mention of his shooting by multiple officers, calling it “irrelevant.”
