Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Once again, it looks as if San Francisco voters will weigh in on the perenially contentious Great Highway. Supporters have gathered 15,626 signatures for a November ballot measure that would re-open the road to cars on weekdays and let the Sunset Dunes park open on weekends.

For back story, see Joe Eskenazi‘s analysis of the intense park v. highway battle.

Brandon Pho reports that in the last two weeks of June, Mayor Daniel Lurie‘s ballot measure committee got a whopping $1.5 million from donors including venture capitalist John Doerr and Lauren Powell Jobs. The mayor is pushing measures that would change the city charter to expand his power.

Naomi Beth Marcus has a fascinating profile of 82-year-old Giuliana Milanese, and her life in San Francisco activism spanning the I-Hotel fight, the Venceremos Brigades to Cuba, nurses’ organizing, and affordable housing.

More soon,
