Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! Glad to be back writing the newsletter, with the newest Mission girl on my lap.

Filmmaker and journalist Kevin Epps was found not guilty of murder —but the jury did convict him of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting of his former brother-in-law, Marcus Polk. Eleni Balakrishnan reports from today’s emotional scene in the courtroom.

At a Board of Supervisors hearing today, U.S. Navy representatives said the discovery of radioactive contaminants at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard last year was “unusual,” but no cause for concernThe city criticized the Navy for only notifying regulators 11 months after plutonium was detected.

For back story, explore our maps and timeline of the cleanup at the Shipyard.

And finally, we asked every S.F. politician their position on the 25-story development proposed for the site of the Marina Safeway. Read all the answers and see who’s squirming.

More soon,

Sara

Don’t forget: Tomorrow at 6 PM, Mission Local presents an important community event on immigration at Grand Theater/Gray Area. Our reporters will host a panel of lawyers, advocates, and a recently fired judge to unpack what’s happened here since the immigration crackdown began, why Trump called off the “surge,” and what comes next. Please reserve your free tickets now, and bring friends to meet with community organizations who’ll be sharing resources and ways to get involved.
