Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Mayor Daniel Lurie named Deputy Chief Derrick Lew as the new police chief today. Lew is a 20-plus-year veteran of the SFPD, and in 2023 was put in charge of drug enforcement in San Francisco. See how Lew’s leadership reflects the city’s current public safety priorities.

Well, the plan to upzone San Franciscoโ€™s western and northern neighborhoods passed the Board of Supervisors 7-4 yesterday after a long, contentious process.ย Io Yeh Gilman has maps, and analysis of the fine print.

Also contentious: how to regulate street vending in the Mission. Oscar Palma has the approved list of commonly stolen goods that the SFPD can now use to take action against people suspected of illegal vending. OK, but “shopping bags?”

See our 2022 back story on illegal vending by Lydia Chรกvez, who documented what was for sale, hour by hour, on the sidewalks around the 24th Street Bart plaza one day.

Mark your calendars now for Mission Local’s December 16 event about the immigration crackdown and resistance in San Francisco. Come hear and talk with panelists including Angela Chan of the Public Defender’s office; asylum-seeker and advocate Antonella; Milli Atkinson of the Immigrant Legal Defense Program of the S.F. Bar Association, Marissa Hatton of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights,ย and Shira Levine, a recently fired immigration judge. Our immigration reporters Margaret Kadifa and Sage Rรญos Mace will moderate.

More soon,

Sara
