Good afternoon! It’s warming up.

Most of San Francisco’s firefighters and police officers live in the greater Bay Area, some in the city itself. But many drive in from distant suburbs, and we found that a few dozen live as far away as Honolulu, North Carolina or Alabama. What do commuter cops mean for community policing?

SFโ€™s police watchdog found misconduct in five of the 12 cases it closed against sheriff’s deputies in 2022. The Sheriffโ€™s Oversight Board still has no director to investigate the allegations, and no power to impose disciplinary actions.

The SFPD has defended its crackdown at Saturday’s skateboarding hill bomb. But several parents say their children were walking home or riding scooters through the area when the police trapped them between lines of officers.

More soon,

Sara
