Good afternoon!

New fences, more police presence, community ambassadors, DPW workers, and BART crisis intervention teams—and yet, writes Eleni Balakrishnan, the sidewalks surrounding the 24th Street plaza are still crowded and chaotic. “I know why this is illegal,” says one vendor. “But we want to make a little more money for our rent, for our food.”

Most of the city’s affordable housing is concentrated in SF’s east side, especially the Tenderloin and Mission. Finally some new housing is slated for the Westside, where Mission Housing will build homes for 115 low-income seniors and families on a Laguna Honda parking lot.

Following two high-speed police chases in the Mission that left one person dead, six injured, and properties destroyed, police commissioners confirmed they’ll revisit SFPD’s policy on car pursuits. ““When you leave any discretion to the police officer, that’s a recipe for disaster,” says a former cop.

And finally, Kate Sofis was formally announced today as the new head of the War Memorial. “City Hall needed a place for her,” said board member Quentin Kopp.

More soon,
