The NIH has awarded Cultura y Arte Nativa de las Americas a five-year, $6 million grant for research and health initiatives in the Mission to address the needs of Native American, Black and Latinx communities. CANA will collaborate with local groups on housing, urban food farming, and mental health projects.
A civic hackathon over the weekend announced winners of its competition for AI solutions to the city’s problems. A 311 chatbot, an app for reporting car break-ins, and an automated crisis-response line got applause from Mayor Breed and City Attorney David Chiu.
After more than a year, a man who brandished a fake gun on Shotwell St. went on trial for resisting arrest and threatening police. His standoff with close to 80 cops, with officers firing 15 times, left the block riddled with bullet holes. Eleni Balakrishnan has the details.
