California has seceded from America, and Molly runs a bookstore that straddles the troubled border of the two countries. It is a kind of literary Switzerland, refusing to take a political stand and remaining neutral because books are for everyone. When war breaks out, Molly and her daughter Phoebe must protect their customers, American and Californian alike. Even in a fractured America, Anders leaves room for connection, for humanity, and for the quiet possibility that books might still help people reach across the divide.
