Growing up undocumented shaped Nicolas Gonzalez-Medina’s understanding of home and belonging. Arriving at 5, following his parents’ dreams of a better life, art became his refuge, a space to navigate identity and find his voice.
Now, his woodblock prints carve through borders and erasure, amplifying voices and igniting conversations. Bold lines and political messages reveal the power of artivism, rooted in his journey and the resilience of our communities.
Born in Guanajuato, raised in Chicago, and now based in Oakland, Nicolas is an artist and activist whose work lives in the streets as much as the gallery, uplifting voices of queer, undocumented communities.
De Aquí y De Allá is an exploration of traditional wood block printing in today’s modern world. The exhibit will feature hand carved and printed wood blocks that spark conversations about identity, culture and social justice movements. Bold lines and expressive faces printed on fabric and paper along with butterfly and portrait motifs representing their BORDERLESS life as they fly freely coloring the skies.
These ancient motifs are decorated with string art, showing their complexities and beauty.
Join us at Acción Latina on April 4th from 2–8PM for the opening reception, with DJ sets by DJ Muy Muy and La Favi.
