Brandon Pho has an unnerving report on what happened after Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed Scott Wiener‘s original AI safety bill and a weaker version passed. The bill failed to trigger safeguards during the countryโs first disclosed AI cyberattack this summer, and now Wiener says it was a mistake to water down protections. Sad to hear: El Tecolote, the longest-running bilingual newspaper in California, has lost most of its staff in the last six months, including its editor-in-chief, who resigned alleging a lack of institutional support. Oscar Palma reports on conflicts inside the Mission newsroom.

And Junyao Yang writes about a longtime Richmond nonprofit threatened with redevelopment of its site by the San Francisco School District, which owns the land. At least 14 other sites have been identified for redevelopment by SFUSD.
