An Urban Alchemy worker was struck, possibly with a pellet gun, on Friday afternoon at the UC Law campus in the Tenderloin, Mission Local learned from officials at the scene.
The victim was conscious and held his neck as he was wheeled out from the university’s Cotchett Center into an ambulance around 3:30 p.m.
Urban Alchemy’s spokesperson Jess Montejano identified the Urban Alchemy ambassador “shot in the line of duty” as Kyle Frank, and said that in initial footage of the incident, it appeared unprovoked.
Ambassadors “put their lives on the line,” Montejano said, wishing Frank a speedy recovery. “We hope that we find the individual that’s responsible for this violence.”
Although police initially told Mission Local that officers found the victim suffering from an “apparent gunshot wound,” Tenderloin Police Captain Matt Sullivan said police determined in an initial investigation that the incident “was not a shooting.”
UC Law’s director of safety and emergency preparedness Noah Skinner called it a “suspicious injury incident” in a campus-wide email obtained by Mission Local.
“Investigators believe the injury may have been caused by a BB gun, pellet gun, or similar object,” Skinner wrote.
As police taped off the block, multiple workers in Urban Alchemy uniforms hurried up towards the intersection of Golden Gate Avenue and Hyde Street.
By 3:45 p.m., the scene had largely cleared out. A few officers remained blocking the entrance to the building and investigating the crime scene. Multiple officers with flashlights were seen inspecting the heavy-duty metal gate at the entrance to the university complex.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information comes in.
