It’s 5:30 a.m., 54° and going to 67°. I smelled a skunk outside this morning.

Uh oh, so maybe those so-called local eggs are not so local, via Mother Jones.

Maybe better to pick up your eggs at Mission Pie (check their website to see if eggs are available) or the Stable Cafe. Anyone else out there sell local eggs?

Whitman Nanny Number 2 is out, and why do I think we may hear from numbers 4, 5 and 6 in the next few days? For now, enjoy this at SF Gate.

So Merle told me I should go to Mission Chinese Food, but I had no idea of all that is going on there at the old Lung Shan, and yes, the SF Weekly agrees, it’s time to go.

By the way, the Health Department gave Lung Shan a score of 92 back in February — an A in cities that use letter grades.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder/executive editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
