Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Terrible news: Awdah Al-Hathaleen, a Palestinian teacher from the West Bank, was denied entry at SFO and sent back when he arrived in June with a valid visa to speak at a Bay Area synagogue. He was shot and killed today, after armed Israeli settlers stormed his Bedouin village.

See our back story on how Al-Hathaleen was detained and deported at the airport.

D4 Supervisor Joel Engardio, who rose to political prominence through backing recalls, is now facing one himself. Joe Eskenazi explains how the “normalizing” of recalls is going to threaten all S.F. elected officials.

Over in D5, Eleni Balakrishnan looks at the “delicate balancing act” of Supervisor Bilal Mahmoud, who must listen to his progressive constituency without alienating his deep-pocketed moderate backers. See the range of legislation the rookie supe has sponsored.

More soon,

Sara
