Mission Local has been given a finalist nod in 10 categories at the California Journalism Awards, which honors the best in reporting across the state.

We’re finalists in the following categories: community-focused reporting, enterprise news, homelessness reporting, best illustration (thanks to our very talented cartoonist, Neil Ballard), in-depth reporting, informational graphic, local election coverage, profile, public service and writing.

“We’re proud to honor the outstanding work of this year’s finalists, who placed in the top five of at least one of their entered categories,” wrote the California News Publishers Association, which puts on the awards. “Their sharp reporting, compelling coverage, and dedication to serving their communities represent the very best of California journalism.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles on May 17.

Last year, Mission Local took home top honors: We were given “general excellence” in our size category, with judges pointing to our “unrivaled” election reporting. Our columnist and managing editor, Joe Eskenazi, also received first (and second) place for commentary.
