Good morning, and welcome to June!
•The City Attorney is suing a Bernal Heights property owner for illegally subdividing 13 units into 32 dwellings rife with severe fire hazards. In one unit, inspectors concluded tenants “could not be rescued in the event of a fire” and pulled them out immediately. The city says landlord James Tseng collected rent and made “significant profit from the same tenants he put in harm’s way.“
• Kate Sofis, who resigned this week as head of the Office of Economic and Workplace Development, has already been appointed to a new city job: managing director of the War Memorial, which includes the SF Symphony, SF Ballet, and SF Opera. Sofis still faces two lawsuits alleging conflicts of interest stemming from her former nonprofit. A mayor’s office representative told OEWD staff that Sofis would be “staying within the city family.”
• The San Francisco International Arts Festival has been priced out of Fort Mason– which means it’s bringing its festival of dance, theater, music and performance art to the Mission. Shows start this weekend: complete calendar here.
By the way, if you missed Joe Eskenazi talking last night at Manny’s with Geoffrea Morris and Honey Mahogany about the murder of Banko Brown, read our live report. And stay tuned for details on next month’s conversation!
More soon,
