This is all about you, dear reader. We want you!

Many of you are already loyal readers.  Now, we would love you to join our list of supporters.

No matter the amount. You count.

We’re launching a two-month campaign to increase our donors by 1,000, a figure that should be attainable because we have many, many more loyal readers who have yet to donate.

The reasons loyal readers lag in donations are many: Lethargy (we get that), it’s free (it is, but won’t endure unless you chip in).

Some readers have said they feel unable to give enough to count.

The latter is what this campaign is about. Any amount helps.

Donating means you have taken the extra step to show that you value what we do.

Plus, small acts of generosity have a multiplier effect.

  • They add up.
  • They encourage others with more resources to chip in as well.

So give what you can. Instead of keeping track of the dollar amount, we will keep a new donor meter.

If you are already a supporter, nudge your friends who read us and praise us, but have yet to contribute.

Thank you!

—Lydia

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
