The Hard Rock Café is throwing  a fundraiser for fire victim Jorge Flores, a tenant who suffered third degree burns in the fire.  His wife, Lucia Flores works at the café.

FUNDRAISER for MISSION FIRE VICTIM – DRAG QUEEN/KING STYLE

WHEN:Thursday  ~  February 19  ~  8:00 pm

WHERE: San Francisco Hard Rock Café
Pier 39, San Francisco, CA  94133
WHAT:  Mission fire survivor, Jorge Flores, is still recovering from 3rd degree burns.  He ran out of his apartment while on fire.  Jorge doesn’t have health insurance and now owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical costs.  He woke up from induced coma earlier this month and was released about a week ago from the St. Francis burn unit.

He and his family lost everything from the massive January 28th Mission fire.  They’re still homeless.  While Jorge was in the burn unit, his wife, Lucia Flores, and son Jimmy Flores were staying at a Red Cross shelter.  During that time, someone actually broke into their car and stole all of the donated items given to them by the Red Cross.

Wife Lucia works at the Pier 39 Hard Rock Café in San Francisco.  Hard Rock is hosting a fundraiser at the restaurant to help pay down the medical costs and get them back on their feet.  The family will be there and available for interviews.  They will have pictures and cell phone footage of Jorge taken at the hospital.  Even though Jorge is out of the hospital, he still has a long recovery ahead of him.

The fundraiser will include a pageant contest with a twist.   Hard Rock has assembled a line  up  of  some  of the Bay Area’s best Drag Kings and Queens to compete in  the pageant.  The pageant/fundraiser will be hosted by Lola Rabbitt Munro and Kitty Purry, with special guests Linda Phung (Miss National Asia Pageant) and Liam Mayclem (CBS).

Also, the fundraiser will auction off prizes such as a guitar played by and signed by musician Colbie Caillat, along with other prizes signed by other famous musicians.  A portion of the evening’s profit from food and drinks at the restaurant will go to the Flores family.

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

At ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
