Are you a big fan of Venga Empanadas? The company wouldn’t exist today without the help of a new financing trend called “microlending” that helps grow small business. One San Jose, Calif.-based lending firm called Opportunity Fund invested a record $7.6 million in loans to small businesses last year, creating about 1,900 jobs.
Speaking of new financing trends – one man is using technology to raise money for San Francisco’s public schools. Todd David created the group edMatch, which raises and distributes funds the school district can’t provide. The company asks private business to match every dollar parents are able to collect through bake sales, car washes and other fundraisers. Parents at all of San Francisco’s 114 schools raised a combined $6 million last year, giving each school another $50,000 to boost arts, technology or whatever program is lacking.
