Tic, tic, tic…the budget fuse has been lit.  What’s been a slow burn will pick up in Sacramento and at City Hall this week and it could get bloody here in the Mission.

The California Budget Project’s analysis of the Governor’s proposal versus  legislature’s  already has both agreeing on cuts that  will mean a lot less money for Mission non profits.  Mission Loc@l has  written about the difficulties at the Native American Health Center and the Mission Neighborhood Health Center.

It could get worse.   The first taste of the new recessionary order happens Wednesday, when San Franciscans board  Muni and BART and pay higher fares–$2.00 on Muni and $1.75 on the least expensive BART ride.  That is if commuters can even get on  BART–negotiations are still underway to avert a strike.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks.
