Welcome to our weekly “Meet the Candidates” series, in which we ask local candidates who have filed to run for office to respond to a question in 100 words or fewer. Answers will be published each week.
District 4 covers the area from 19th Avenue to Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park to Lakeshore. It includes the Sunset, Parkside and Lakeshore neighborhoods.
Mission Local hosted a District 4 candidates forum on April 29 at the Ortega Branch library. If you missed it, you can watch the recording here.
You can read candidates’ responses to previous questions here.
The Sunset Night Market, one of the most popular community events in the Sunset, returned this year with four installments. The next is coming up on June 12, and the market has drawn tens of thousands of people to Irving Street, boosting businesses, especially restaurants, along the way.
But Sunset business owners have asked: Are there other city-sponsored community events, like the Sunset Night Market, that could benefit those not selling food and drinks? What if Taraval or Noriega streets have their own versions?
This week, we asked the candidates: Besides the Sunset Night Market, what specific community events would you put together to boost small businesses in the Sunset? Where would you put these events?

I have helped create community events in the Sunset, including helping bring the first Sunset Night Market to the district, starting the Outer Sunset Farmers Market, and Movies at McCoppin. As a business owner and President of the merchants association I know the positive impact these events have on businesses and our merchant corridors.
I would expand on this by bringing back events like Taste of Taraval, bringing night markets into other neighborhood corridors, and creating more cultural events that reflect the diversity of the Sunset.
These events bring more traffic to local businesses and bring neighbors and community together.

Beyond the Night Market, I’d work with our local merchant associations and the Office of Small Business to launch a Sunset Small Business Passport, shop local, get stamped, win prizes, across Irving, Noriega, Taraval, and the local business pockets on Judah, Lawton, and Vicente.
I’d organize a Pokémon GO x Local Business Scavenger Hunt timed to the World Championships in August. I’d work with merchants to activate holiday lighting across all our commercial corridors.
And I’d partner with SF Travel to direct tourism activation towards Sunset small businesses around major events, so when San Francisco wins, our neighborhood wins, too.

With the San Francisco Fringe Festival no longer operating, I’d love to help launch a Sunset Fringe Festival along the outer Judah and Irving corridors: Theater performed in galleries, bookstores, cafes, and local businesses.
I’d also support a Sunset Art & Music Walk connecting Judah Street to Taraval Street, with local musicians, artists, and participating merchants animating the evening. And a Sunset Dance Festival would bring local dance companies and cultural organizations outdoors, performing in front of neighborhood businesses.
Together, these events celebrate the Sunset’s creative spirit while supporting artists, driving foot traffic, and strengthening the small businesses that define our community.

The Sunset Night Market on Irving Street is a wonderful event, but District 4 is a massive, diverse neighborhood, and we cannot leave our other merchant corridors behind. The businesses on Taraval have been devastated by years of delayed construction, Noriega often gets overlooked, and we cannot forget about the Judah corridor as well.
Fortunately, I am very lucky to have a team that is highly experienced in curating events and deeply invested in our local art and music scene. As Supervisor, my plan is to work directly with neighbors, nonprofits, and small businesses to expand community events across the … read more here.

I would expand neighborhood-focused events that bring foot traffic to Sunset commercial corridors. Ideas include an Irving Street Restaurant Week and Night Stroll with late-night dining and live music; weekend family street fairs on Noriega, Taraval, and Judah with food vendors and cultural performances; and a “Shop the Sunset” holiday market series supporting retailers.
I also support makers markets featuring local artists and small businesses at McCoppin Square and Sunset Recreation Center, as well as cultural heritage festivals celebrating the Sunset’s Chinese, Irish, Latino, and Filipino communities. These events should rotate across corridors so benefits reach businesses throughout the district.
