IF all goes well with its 10:30 health inspection, Boogaloos will soon be back in business. It used to be hard for diners to find out that a favorite restaurant had been closed by the Health Department — often, owners would post “Closed for Renovations” signs — not to mention why it had been closed.

But Rigoberto Hernandez changed that with his reporting for Mission Loc@l in the summer of 2010. Nowadays, when a place is closed by the Health Department, the city posts a notice telling diners why.

Uptown Almanac (thank you) caught this photo earlier in the week.

This morning a new sign was posted. They aren’t cleared yet, but any minute now, the inspector will arrive.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

  1. I read you’re blog regularly and appreciate the eye on the community. But I have to say you’re follow up to sensationalized stories like this one about Boogaloos, lacks proper follow up. If you’re going to start a story, you should plan on finishing it missionlocal.

    1. Mission Friend: My apologies. Here is the complete update: The restaurant was re-inspected on Sept. 1 and reopened. The vermin infestation that closed it has been taken care of. The latter was discovered because of a complaint – that could have come from a customer or an employee.
The last full, unannounced, health inspection was on May 10, 2010. At that time Boogaloos had one high violation for improper hot and cold holding temperatures and got a score of 93 out of 100. The violation was abated by June, 2010. Let me know if you have any more questions. Best, Lydia
