San Francisco police officers arrested a suspect after a fatal shooting at the edge of the Tenderloin on Monday afternoon, San Francisco’s fifth homicide of the year.

The suspect is Lewis Jefferson Butler, 23. He was booked on charges of homicide, felon in possession of a firearm, battery against a police officer, and resisting arresting. The police department said Butler also had an outstanding warrant in Alameda County.

At 5:29 p.m., San Francisco police officers had come to the corner of Turk and Mason streets, near the Powell BART station, responding to reports of a shooting.

They found a victim “suffering from a gunshot wound” and rendered aid, according to the department. Medics were called, but the victim was declared dead on site.

“Shortly after the homicide occurred, SFPD officers quickly took the suspect into custody,” the department wrote after the incident. The shooting is still under investigation.

At this time last year, San Francisco had recorded nine homicides. Crime generally has fallen this year; violent crime is down 15 percent year-to-date compared to the same period in 2024, and property crime is down 32 percent.

Anyone with information is asked to contact SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.
