So the biggest news at the plaza – three new trash cans. Two on the northeast plaza and an additional trash can on the southeast plaza. The cans arrived on Thursday.
Although a few of the cans did have trash around them, lots of garbage landed inside and pickups will likely come quickly as all eyes are on the plazas. Mayor Daniel Lurie has promised to change the dynamic at the busy transit hub and he’s checking in on them.
In fact, a Reddit poster tells us the mayor was there this morning.
If so, he likely saw the side streets suffering as today’s photos illustrate and he may have witnessed the vending going on at the north end of the northeast plaza.
There is no quick fix to the drug dealing, vending and chaos at the plazas and the nearby sidestreets, Oscar Palma reports today. It is a difficult, but not impossible challenge.
I’ve included one photo from last night as it illustrates how the vending on the northwest plaza picks up at night. If you have photos, date them and send them to info@missionlocal.com. Please let us know if you want a byline.

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.
As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.
At ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
Trash cans..if you think you are going to solve the problems with trash cans good luck. we don’t need more trash cans, we need less trash. And by trash you understand what I mean. At one point in your life, excuses are difficult to come and generate sympathy. And for those who think it is ok to live that lifestyle, please give us your address, you probably have a room available for someone. And for those who think I lack empathy, well, lately, this city did this to me and plenty of others and I am a long time resident, appalled by mediocrity .At City hall, failures everywhere, corruption everywhere, entitled people everywhere; I know the salaries are pretty good. The same applies to non-profit. When I see them walking around before an election distributing fliers, I smile. I trust those politicians like I trust this administration with my savings. But keep going, trash cans everywhere please!
Please keep your comments short and civil. Do not leave multiple comments under multiple names on one article. We will zap comments that fail to adhere to these short and easy-to-follow rules.
I appreciate that your coverage got some trash cans in the plaza, yay

“we don’t need more trash cans” is flat wrong.
