Gunshots rang out on Mission Street on Monday, across the street from where Mayor Daniel Lurie, Sen. Scott Weiner and other city politicos had, just minutes earlier, announced the introduction of a state bill to address street fencing.
Onlookers ducked for cover from the pair of gunshots behind the vans of the TV crews that had covered the press conference.
Two men were arrested while a woman yelled at one of the men, “violador, violador” (“rapist, rapist”). The shooting happened outside of the Rhada Hotel on Mission Street between 16th and 17th streets.
Witnesses told Mission Local that a man dressed in a white hoodie and white sweatpants allegedly fired a weapon twice during an altercation with another man. These are the men depicted in the photograph accompanying this story, both of whom were detained by police.
The alleged shooter, witnesses say, walked south on the western side of the street and started banging on a parked car with a gun.
A man then ran out of the car and the two started fighting, with the man from the car attempting to grab the gun. Police arrived within minutes.
Two shots were fired during the altercation, but none of the suspects seemed to be injured. Police said, however, they were advised that a victim was being treated in the hospital with an apparent gunshot wound.

Welcome to the Mission, Mayor. Now that you got a taste of our “quality of life issues”, due something to improve it.
“These are the men depicted in the photograph accompanying this story, who were both detained by police” – So you read that part right? Short of a big red cape, what exactly are you expecting from folks? (I ignored your typo, welcome.) Crime doesn’t go away because a new Mayor wants it to and this sounds like an extra-random one. Are you suggesting we need to crack down on arguments or firearms? Neither is exclusive to the Mission, so do tell.
Welcome – English is not my 1st language. What is your excuse for poor writing? Poor educational system in the US?
IMO – the new Mayor should have a plan of action to improve the quality of life issues we have in the Mission. As a serious contender for Mayor, he should have been well versed on the issues by District. Correct?
Touchy about typos are we? I don’t blame your education or the country you hail from, for what it’s worth. Sometimes a typo is just a typo. If you found a typo or error in what I wrote go ahead and point it out.
However, Breed was mayor for almost a decade and Lurie’s been on the job for a fortnight. Saying he should have a magic plan to quash all arguments and remove all firearms from the hands of people who we wouldn’t want to have them, that’s not realistic for a Mayor or anyone at all, really. He does have some plans to address these issues but somehow I don’t feel like you would care to read about them, evaluate them, improve them or suggest changes to them beyond “fix it” or the like. Well, if it were that easy believe you me it’d be fixed, if simply for the bragging rights and nothing more. But it’s not simple. In this case all parties were arrested and the random crime noted here is for all intents and purposes completely cleared and over with. So whatever Lurie’s “plan” was or wasn’t that you’re decrying without specifics, in this singular instance it actually did work. Yet you’re upset at him, vaguely. Why? Do you have an answer for what police could have done differently, or what policies the new Mayor should already have implemented successfully by this point 2 weeks into his tenure? Speak up, be specific. Anyone can complain, it does the same in any language. Being specific is what elevates a complaint into a plan.
The Tenderloinization of the Mission proceeds apace.
A gun was fired, nobody was injured, the suspects arrested. Clever stuff.
You didn’t read the entire article yet are such an expert.. “Police said, however, they were advised that a victim was being treated in the hospital with an apparent gunshot wound.” Maybe try to be informed before condescending to anyone. It can make you look incredibly stupid, if not.
I did read that final sentence, and it has yet to be confirmed that gunshot would was related to this incident by the reporting. “Two shots were fired during the altercation, but none of the suspects seemed to be injured.” Did you read that, just prior? Good for you. There’s nothing in the article that directly connects this incident to the injured person. SFPD could yet give details and say who was injured – but they didn’t here. Keep trying, gentle reader. “The Tenderloinization of the Mission proceeds apace.” – I thought this was very, very, very clever though. Beating up on the T’loin as a “location” while implying the Mission is just as bad, that’s just really important and informed commentary. (/s) Any parting digs at Boudin that you’d like to side-include so cleverly?
Don’t forget to tell us “crime is down.”
DO NOT PRINT
The guy in white was armed and he ended up being chased and beat by his intended target. What a loser in so many ways.
Word on the street is that they know each other (they’re related or something.)
marcos reveals their own (and that of many others) overt racism and prejudice by creating words to disparage certain areas of the city.
my experience in the mission is no different than any other part of the city which has profound elements of wealth and poverty side by side.
Isn’t it racist to presume that objections to the establishment of fentanyl dealerships and the rise of gun violence around 16th BART are objections to Black people?
I guess after you all try to dismiss all concerns about public squalor as “rich people” who don’t want to look at poor people and that doesn’t work, next up on the intersectionality roulette is race.
You didn’t actually object to fentanyl dealing, you smeared both the T’loin and the Mission in a vague slogan-type of way. There’s nothing that I read in this article about an argument and shots fired that has anything to do with fentanyl, nor black people. That’s all external baggage you’re trucking into the story so far unrelated to the events. So when someone notices you’re smearing 2 neighborhoods and objects, rather than pretend you’re not doing that… why not admit it? Or is that giving away the “game” we play here?
🙄
“my experience in the mission is no different than any other part of the city which has profound elements of wealth and poverty side by side.”
Ah, I had no idea that wealthy people cause crime!
So all we have to do is get rid of all those rich folks and then crime will plummet?
wikipedia.org/wiki/White-collar_crime – Worth a read to refresh your memory about the largest $ crimes and what they actually entail. It’s the extreme poverty that is linked to both crime and the education levels that fuel it, and when the lion’s share of money is spent on pet projects for the Billionaire class and connected City Family hyper-vocal constituents instead of the schools, daycare, vocational and other programs that would actually dent poverty – including the 6 figure salaries of non-profit executives who “serve the underprivileged” as they claim – it’s people who push the idea that poverty itself is a moral choice rather than a consequence of a failing system (nationwide) who are the actual drivers of same. Check that mirror for clues, and of course any helpful suggestions you might find there as well. (/s)
Oscar,
Talk about being at the right place for a story at the right time.
I was at the meeting with you as I’ve made attending these hearings as a day job to feed my Political habit.
I call I call it my ‘DJ’ for Day Job and every middle class or above techie commentor will tell you that it is important to keep a lower class person such as myself busy when they don’t have a job which is me for the past 18 years and I contribute much more positively to Society than ever and I’ve always been a Net Gain for my species.
So, the hearing was essentially losing Billionaires in the Mayor’s race to Mayor Lurie using a PR ‘tough on crime legislation’ as an excuse to get time in front of a bunch of cameras which is good for him in his race for Nancy Pelosi’s job and I hope she keeps it til she’s 100 (and, could) …
I’m told Scott is very unhappy with Nancy and if she does quit now it will be Scott and her daughter and Jackie Fielder.
Scott got his Face Time and the losing billionaires showed off Danny Sauter and Mahmood from D-3 and D-5 whom they backed and held the meeting in Fielder’s front yard using DJ to draw the cameras.
I hope the Mayor is considering an option on the Vendor problem that includes the Armory.
Just saying.
go Niners !!
