I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder/executive editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

  3. Campers,

Like most of the commentors I’ve picked up trash for years as a volunteer.

I spent a year keeping Clarion Alley clean and even filled the pot holes and gutters with broken bags of $2 concrete.

I left after numerous threats from gang bangers who killed a couple of people during that time with the Mission Police Station across the street.

The cops added to the scene by throwing horse shit on murals protesting white power and celebrating women of power.

I moved my efforts towards clearing every bit of sidewalk and street I can see out my triple bay that overlooks 14th and Valencia.

That includes the Armory and it took 2 years to get the owners, AJ Partners to clear the scaffolding from around the rear Julian street and 14th Street sides just in time for a Concert thanking Lurie’s ‘Tipping Point’ concert.

I got a meeting with him and pushed an idea for a …

    San Francisco Million Dollar Lottery

You work and hour and you get a ticket.

Even if you’re 9 years old and doing it with your class.

You can win a million dollars.

You can buy a ticket but it costs minimum wage of $20 for an hour.

When people complain about trash just ask them …

    “Where’s your Lottery Ticket ?”

Sadly, you cannot count on DPW.

    Go Niners !!

    h.

I was an early volunteer for Manny’s Sunday Pickups and became a Sponsor at $36

  4. Nice to see Mr Lurie out helping and interested in cleaning up the garbage dump of SF.

The entitlement of those who throw garbage all over in this city is a behavior that should have consequences .

Lower Polk Street is a garbage dump. The homeless and addicts here are very selfish and show no respect for this ruined neighborhood.

Preston was useless. He is the Trump of the progressives .

Could the city and citizens please focus on the lower polk street area and clean this destroyed ghetto up?
