Postres del Corazón, a baking competition, brought together bakers from different countries — Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala and the United States — last Friday to showcase desserts inspired by recipes from their home countries.

It was cupcakes against flan and a spread of other Latin American sweet treats at the event, which was held at La Placita on Capp and 24th streets on Feb. 9. A panel of five judges sat and tasted and meticulously scored the desserts; Monica Chávez, took home the first prize of $750, for her Kahlúa flan.

Reporter Kelly Waldron walks us through the bake-off — and tries to sample some of the desserts along the way.
