A 27-year-old who was stabbed earlier in the week died from his injuries on Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

The victim was South San Francisco resident Frank Chavez, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

On Jan. 31 at 12:30 a.m., after a stabbing was reported on the 500 block of Potrero Avenue near 18th Street, Mission Station police officers arrived. They found Chavez suffering from a visible stab wound, and tried to give him medical aid. Chavez was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died from the injuries on Wednesday.

Multiple neighbors or employees in the area were not aware of the stabbing.

Marcelino Padilla, who lives around the area, said it was not entirely surprising, however. “A lot of people come up here to use drugs, from the McDonalds near 16th up to here. You never know if they have a knife or a weapon,” he said, taking a drag on a cigarette.

Another neighbor who lives in the nearby Mariposa Apartments said he and his wife hadn’t heard anything. “We are inside, mostly,” he said.

Officers are investigating the incident as a homicide, and have not yet made any arrests.
