Modern versions of classic Indian dishes will soon be served in the former Nostra Spaghetteria space on Valencia Street near 14th Street, when Babu Ji opens there.

Chef Jessi Singh and his wife Jennifer already have one Babu Ji location open in New York City, their third after opening and selling two restaurants in Australia. Now, they are adding another in the Mission District, where they first met.

The restaurant’s name, Babu Ji, is an endearing term used for a self-appointed village mayor, the person who always knows everyone and what’s going on. The menu will feature curries and tandoori items as well as a “Chef’s Tasting Menu that is crafted to surprise guests with food that is soulful, modern and fun.”

Though it will be open Monday and Tuesday, Babu Ji will close for Thanksgiving on Wednesday and Thursday, reopening Friday.

Nostra Spaghetteria, the former occupant of the space, closed in October. After a year of being open, the restaurant had rebranded from Plin to a slightly less upscale restaurant Nostra and a companion bar. In March 2016, Nostra was listed for sale.
