A man was struck and killed by a BART train at the 16th Street station at 7:22 p.m. on Friday night, according to BART officials. The station was closed from just after 7:30 p.m. until 9:32 p.m, officials said, and normal services were resumed then.

A spokesperson said via a voicemail message that no foul play was suspected in the “person under the train” incident and that the incident was not an accident, but did not elaborate on the cause. BART police officers on the scene refused to answer questions about the incident.
“I can report that based on initial investigations, there’s no foul play or accident-type scenarios involved in this situation,” said Alicia Trost, the BART spokesperson, in a recording left on her voicemail. Trost said the victim was an adult male, but that no other information was available.
Officials said to expect 20 minute delays on the Daly City line as a result of the incident.
The 16th Street station was closed to all BART trains for about two hours, with trains passing through the station but not stopping there. System-wide delays were caused in both the Daly City and East Bay directions by the incident, and some trains were being held at the Montgomery Street station to ease congestion there.

In civilized countries they have partitions on the platforms that only open when the train stops…..
Allow me to express regret over the loss of life at this transit hub. In the coming days, I’m sure we’ll get more info from the BART police and public info office regarding the death on Friday night.
Speaking of BART, there will be a San Francisco Transit Riders Union forum, co-sponsored with the SF Bicycle Coalition and WalkSF, about BART District 7 and 9 races this Monday, Sept 12 starting at 7 pm.
It takes place at the Mission Pool Clubhouse on 19th Street and Valencia. All three candidates in D9, which includes the Castro and Mission and a whole lot of acreage across the City, Bevan Dufty and Gwyneth Borden and myself are on the panel.

There are many issues at the 16th Street BART plaza level, and the lower two levels, concourse and platform.
With the days ticking down to the November election, it there enough time for the BART D9 race to focus on solutions for the sanitation hazards at this multi level transit hub?
