A Mission Local reader writes in today that the water fountain at Dolores Park has been out for months.  We’re following up with Rec and Parks to see when it will be repaired and we will update as soon as we hear something.

Update: Well, on first follow up, Rec and Park reported that, yes, the fountain had been fixed, but we went out to check and no, the fountain is not working.

Update #2: Rec and Park is now looking into fixing the water fountain again.

Update #3:  Connie Chan offered a fuller report on the fountain saying, it was fixed a couple of days ago. “However, it was broken again.”  The reason? ” “The potable water pipeline of the fountain is tied in with the aging potable water pipeline (more than 80 years-old) for the Park. It is extremely fragile and ruptures every time there is heavy equipment near it.  This is also the reason why Dolores Park needs the renovation.  The potable water pipe line is scheduled to be replaced once the south side of the Park begin construction.”

That will happen on June 18th.  In the meantime, Chan wrote, Rec and Park is “asking folks to pledge to the “Love Dolores” campaign at LoveDolores.com.”

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder/executive editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
