I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.
As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.
As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

This construction has already been going on for about a year. Zuckerberg was “trying to keep a low profile” in regards to the fact that this is his place. Kinda funny that he’s “into privacy” considering he makes his money depleting other people’s…
Disagree. That area is an area of already nice homes that are full of wealthy folks. 2-3 years of construction is a long time to “remodel” a home. When you buy a home in an area where all the homes are nice and expensive, you probably don’t think someone will do a tear down and have teams of people working daily for years. These people already have money and live in a great area. I don’t think it’s envy as much as just plain annoyance. Remember, wealthy people tend to get annoyed by noise and unprettiness more than the average folks.
You are right in a way, in about 10 years they’ll forget about the annoyance and love their property values.
Short-sighted. nobody likes construction work on their block but it’s not forever and, when this is done, they’ll have uplifted property values and the kudos of a celebrity for a neighbor.
I wonder how much of this alleged disquiet is really just disguised envy?
