Rice Paper Scissors

Rice Paper Scissors at Brick and Mortar — 1710 Mission Street near Duboce — has extended its lunch to every weekday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Earlier they served only on Monday through Wednesday.

We dropped by at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, bummed because I thought it was open until 3 p.m., but the owners Valerie Luu and Katie Kwan were still working so they served us and another woman who arrived late.

Pho for $13. Cash only!
Pho for $13.

The beef Pho was excellent and we’ll be headed back today to try the chicken salad. The place used to be a favorite when it popped up at different Mission garages a couple of years ago. Luu said the new location at the northern end of Mission Street is tricky, but business is doing fine.

Go! Eat! It’s terrific and reasonable. Warning: It’s cash only for now.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

  1. How nice to see my photo “Garlic with Angry Banana” on here from the 16th St. markets. I was forced to leave SF and move back to Portland. Little thing called cost of living. Sad, but luckily Portland’s got it going on. I even found a job here, mirabile dictu! Cheers, beautiful SF!
