The Business Insider lists one place in the Mission District. Hint: Old brews.
I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.
As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.
As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.

I’ve never been to Southern Pacific, but the picture in the linked article shows a group that hardly reflects the demography of the Mission District.
Not every establishment in the Mission has to serve the same demographic. Notoriously tribal San Francisco, for all it’s alleged diversity, loves themed joints.
There are plenty of joints in the Mission that serve specific homogeneous groups.
It reflects the demographics of the New* Mission

Nice topic and, yes, Southern Pacific is proving a local magnet for Mission movers and shakers. I’ve mentioned before that it is my local hangout and if any of the readers here would like to engage me in a little one-on-one repartee, that would be my choice for a locale.
The narrow dogleg street that SP is on used to be a no-go area up to about a decade ago. Cars parked there would be stolen or vandalized, hookers would use the alley for a quickie and the gutters would be festooned with needles.
And now it’s a cutting edge food and drink destination where deals get brokered and prosperity gets created out of thin air. Gotta love progress.
How’s the food? I normally broker my deals in more confidential spaces, however, I would consider eating here with a favorable review of the food.
It’s typical bar fare and comfort food, but maybe a notch or two up.
No booths but it is spread out, and there’s also a garden and a balcony. Deals get done but I wouldn’t give away trade secrets there.
Thrillsville.
