Mission Local walks the streets of the Mission to capture portraits of its residents. This is the first of an ongoing photo series on the people of the Mission.
Social Media Whiz. Marta came from Zaragoza, Spain to master her English but everyone she spoke to wanted to practice Spanish and earn her Master's Degree from UC Berkeley. After just a few months in the Mission, she she felt at home, but alas, she had to leave San Francisco to follow a job with CNet. She now lives in Boston, but knows the Mission well and having her return to manage our social media has been a coup for us.

Lanny McBroom is now dead isn’t he? I was told he died in a nursing home of non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The police found him in the fish district and saw he was sick and sent him to the hospital. I was told he died in the nursing home they sent him to for the last few weeks of his life..
Yes. Lanny’s obituary just showed up last week in his hometown newspaper. I knew Lanny well in the late 70s as our houses were close by and he was 2 years behind me in high school. I knew Lanny worked at JFK Stadium for a long time (apparently before teaching career). I was perplexed why his obituary was showing up now as he died in 2019. So, I used Google and found this post. Wow!! God Bless Lanny. Something went off kilter for him. If Lanny is the face of someone homeless or in need of help, the backstory is he was as good a person as anyone else.

In reference to your Mission Local article of July 5, 2013: I recently saw the article about Lanny McBroom.
I used to work with Lanny years ago before he started teaching. I remember him as a very interesting
and intelligent young man. It is hard to believe that the man in the photo is Lanny. I can’t imagine
him in that condition. I remember his wife and baby daughter; they were a very loving and hospitable
family. I hope things have improved for him.

I was told Lanny is now dead. I was told the story of how he was found in the fish district by police and sent to the hospital where he was diagnosed non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was sent to a nursing home in the last weeks of his life and died there. Sister still have not buried his ashes though

that’s the drunk guy at 19th and 20th at Mission, he drinks all the time.
No, that’s (I know him by name but not sure he wants everyone to know it) and he sits at either 23rd or 24th and Mission. He is very polite and never bothers anyone. He has a story to tell like most people in this world, but I have never seen him drinking.
