A gas leak at 24th and Bryant streets Wednesday caused the temporary evacuation of approximately 40 people from nearby buildings.

Fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said that the leak was reported at 10:39 a.m.; the Chronicle reports that it was capped at 12:35 p.m. According to PG&E, the leak was caused by contractors who were doing excavation work and dropped a large rock on a plastic gas main.
