Seen above, a section of a 3D mural made by the League of Anaglyph, a fictional artists’ society that is composed of two very real artists: Stan Heller and Rio Yañez. The full mural is being installed at SomArts as part of Illuminations, a Day of the Dead-themed group show curated by Yañez and his father, Rene.

Those of you who know your local history will recall that Rene Yañez was one of the artists who began holding Day of the Dead celebrations in the Mission in the 1970s.

The show opens this Friday, October 7, at 934 Brannan (@ 8th street) with a big party and performance from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibition runs from October 8 to November 5, and the gallery is open Tuesday-Friday, noon-7 p.m., and on Saturday from noon to 5.
