It’s 6:04 a.m. – way too early for anyone to be up – and 56° going to a cool 62. Still, there is hope in that 10-day forecast as it starts warming up over the weekend and hits 72 on Tuesday.

Well, the SF Appeal scooped us on the pigeon nest that closed a popular taqueria. You can read the details here.

More bad news on poverty in California. “Six million residents last year had incomes below the federal poverty line of $22,113 for a family of four,” writes the LA Times. “Nearly 1 in 5 California residents lacked health insurance in 2010.”

And in yet another sign of the growing gap between very rich and the rest of us, it’s getting even more expensive to brave the bad news. Michael Bauer writes of the rise of the $13 cocktail. Still, he points out, drinks at the Mission’s Baretta can be had for $9 to $11 and offers a recipe for its Rattlesnake with Rye here.

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
